Portland's Sustainable Luxuries & Exquisite Food Picks

I read this great blog article the other day, and just had to share!

America’s Northwest: Portland Oregon for a Luxury Stay & Exquisite Food Picks - by Jessica Festa

Check out her "epicure's guide to Portland, Oregon," on WeBlogTheWorld.com. Or better yet, get the real deal by visiting the sustainable businesses she mentions!

Hotel Lucia in downtown Portland showcases local artisan foods in their rooms, restaurants, bar and at the front desk. As examples of how Hotel Lucia is "very arts and innovation focused," the author describes Hotel Lucia as "very arts and innovation focused," including an Instagram wall pulling photos from a Portland-oriented hash tag, unique amenities like calling down for an iPad or mix-filled iPod, and an invitation to describe your "eco-personality" to housekeeping.

Portland Food CartsPortland Food Trucks bring you the world! Jessica Festa describes them as, "artisanal food carts selling everything: Georgian, Thai, Israeli, Indian, vegan, European, Mediterranean, Italian and anything else you can think of, all made fresh by locals."

Find a bit more information about Portland's food cart scene on our Enjoy Portland Food and Drink page.

Portland Farmers Market at Portland State University is one of 8 farmers markets in Portland. In addition to finding "hundreds of produce vendors, farmers and artisan purveyors selling natural, fresh foods sourced mostly within 100 miles," the author comments on "one the best parts of the market" -- enough free samples from almost every vendor to make a full meal of food, drink and condiments!

Hopworks Urban Brewery is the next port of call on Jessica Festa's recommended list. Hopworks is known for "proudly brewing world-class beer as sustainably as possible in Portland, Oregon since 2007." Certified organic beer, a carbon neutral brewery and grain recycling program, their restaurant features unique food and drink items plus "recycled bike frames dangling above the bar."

Salt & Straw is Portland's farm-to-cone ice cream shop. Jessica says she "is hesitant to even call what Salt & Straw produces ice cream. It's more like magic." She recommends sampling from the theme of the month, and also choosing one of their ice cream flights if you can't decide on a flavor.

Kieron Wiedner, First Nature Tour Guide is an expert on local ecosystems. For a "true taste of Oregon," get Kieron to customize a tour for you. "Learn more about where your food comes from in an adventurous way."

The Ace Hotel is a SE Portland boutique hotel with a "American-meets-European-meets-Portland" restaurant named Clyde Common. As Jessica Festa describes the experience, "The Ace Hotel immerses guests in Portland culture through art, local products, and funky innovative rooms." The dinner menu at Clyde Common changes daily and "the craft cocktail program...is focused on thoughtful craft cocktails make with the hightest-quality ingredients."

Blue Star Donuts features "artisinal, sustainably-made treats" that are made throughout the day with local and organic ingredients. Creative flavors like Blueberry Bourbon Basil and Passionfruit and Cocoa Nib ensure that "both typical and unexpected flavors are paired for an addictive result."

The Multnomah Whiskey Library describes itself as holding "an exhaustive collection representing all major, and lesser, styles of distilled spirits known to the modern world. Must-have experiences Jessica recommends include, "watching mixologists climb a sliding 'Beauty And The Beast'-style library staircase to grab spirits off the five-level shelving, seeing food from kitchen appear out of a secret dark wood wall panel, and watching a craft cocktail being made tableside."

Portland - Unique, Wonderful City of Coffee

Spanish Coffee at Huber's CafePortland's American Barista & Coffee school proudly calls its home town a "unique, wonderful coffee mecca." OregonBusiness.com awarded Portland a High Five for being the "unlikely capital of American coffee culture" for its simple, handcrafted pour over cups of coffee (http://www.oregonbusiness.com/high-five/5098-portlands-coffee-culture-returns-to-pour-over-methods).

Really it's not surprising that a city so serious about microbrewed beers and bottling fine wines would also be part of a movement to produce high-quality, artisan coffee. Coffee Bean International, the city's largest roaster, describes Portlanders as "really interested in that handcrafted, living free kind of thing," and says "coffee falls into that category when you start to learn more about it."
